Anne Heche says her 1997 relationship with Ellen DeGeneres led to Heche being escorted by security from her “Volcano” movie premiere and then fired from a major motion picture deal.
Speaking on “Dancing With the Stars” Monday night, Heche made the revelations about her relationship with DeGeneres on a video released before taking the dance floor on the ABC reality competition.
“I was in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres for three-and-a-half years and the stigma attached to that relationship was so bad that I was fired from my multimillion-dollar picture deal and I did not work in a studio picture for 10 years,” Heche claimed.
Heche talked about meeting DeGeneres at a 1997 Vanity Fair Oscars party. “That was the night that changed my life forever,” she recalled. The two were a couple until 2000.
Heche said she wanted to bring DeGeneres as her date to the premiere for her Fox disaster picture “Volcano,” in which she had the starring role. Heche claimed that Fox studios executives balked.
“When I told them I was taking Ellen as my date, I was told if I took Ellen I would lose my Fox contract,” Heche stated, saying DeGeneres urged caution. “At that moment she took my hand and said, ‘Do what they say.’ I said, ‘No thanks.’ “
Heche said she took DeGeneres to the premiere and “was ushered out by security before the movie even ended, and I was told I was not allowed to go to the afterparty for fear they would get picture of me with a woman.”
“It was unbelievable,” said Heche. “She was warning me this is going to happen.”
Video over, Heche then danced her routine in a rainbow outfit.
Judge Bruno Tonioli was wowed by Heche’s words in the video.
“I really admire you for what you did. Very few people have the courage,” said Tonioli, calling Heche a “multicolored warrior” for her outfit.
After the dance, Heche proclaimed, “I feel redeemed.”
